World Health Day: UN Warns Aid Cuts Threaten Progress in Reducing Maternal Deaths

The UN has warned that global health aid cuts could reverse gains in reducing maternal deaths, despite a 40% drop recorded between 2000 and 2023.
In a report marking World Health Day, the WHO and partners said 260,000 women died from pregnancy-related causes in 2023, with progress stalling since 2016. COVID-19 also worsened outcomes, with 40,000 additional deaths in 2021 alone.
The UN urged urgent investment in maternal health, warning that cuts are crippling services in vulnerable regions. Sub-Saharan Africa, while recording gains, still accounts for 70% of maternal deaths. The report highlights the need for stronger health systems, more midwives, and expanded access to care, especially in conflict zones.
