Ukraine is set to receive over $33 billion in aid from European allies, French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday.

Speaking after the Special European Council summit in Brussels, Macron stated that the funds would come from sanctioned Russian assets seized by European Union countries following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

He emphasized that the priority is to support Ukraine and its troops in the short term, confirming that in 2025, the EU will allocate 30.6 billion euros from these frozen assets.

At the summit, Hungary abstained, while 26 European nations endorsed a statement supporting a peace deal that upholds Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. However, all 27 EU leaders called on the European Commission to explore new strategies to boost defense spending across member states.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who attended the meeting, expressed gratitude to EU leaders for their continued support, especially amid strained relations with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, the United States has paused military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, with officials from both nations set to meet in Saudi Arabia next week.
