The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to singer Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, in the sum of ₦20 million with one surety. Justice Ekerete Akpan issued the ruling following the singer’s not-guilty plea to a two-count charge related to alleged cybercrime. The surety, required to be a Level 10 civil servant residing in Abuja, must provide an affidavit of means, letters of appointment, and last promotion for verification by the court. Additional bail conditions include the submission of Speed Darlington’s international passport and recent passport photographs by both the defendant and the surety. Until these conditions are met, the singer will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre. The case, brought by the Inspector-General of Police, centers on alleged offensive messages posted on the singer’s Instagram handle targeting fellow artist Burna Boy. The prosecution claims the messages were intended to cause annoyance, insult, and potential harm, violating sections of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015. Justice Akpan adjourned the trial to March 18, 2025.
