Sokoto Issues Meningitis Alert as Outbreak Spreads

The Sokoto State Ministry of Health has urged residents to remain vigilant following a surge in meningitis cases across several local government areas.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar Wurno, confirmed that laboratory tests conducted on suspected cases had confirmed the presence of meningitis in the state.
Dr. Abubakar emphasized that the ministry had intensified surveillance, case management, and public health interventions to contain the outbreak.
He advised residents to take preventive measures, including:
Seeking immediate medical attention if experiencing symptoms such as fever, severe headache, or neck stiffness.
Maintaining good personal and environmental hygiene.
Avoiding crowded places and ensuring proper ventilation in homes and public spaces.
He also urged the public to report suspected cases to the nearest health facility for prompt intervention.
Meanwhile, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has ensured that essential medications have been distributed to health facilities across the state to combat the outbreak.
