Sokoto Governor Responds to Timber Market Fire, Pledges Support for Affected Traders

Governor Aliyu Ahmed of Sokoto State has expressed his condolences over the devastating fire that destroyed the Sokoto Timber Market, also known as Kasuwar Yan Katako, earlier today, Thursday. The blaze engulfed over 500 stalls, leaving at least 4,000 traders facing substantial losses. In a statement shared on his official X handle, Governor Ahmed offered his sympathies to those affected by the disaster. “On behalf of the government and the people of Sokoto State, I extend my heartfelt sympathies to all those impacted by this tragedy. We stand with you in this challenging time and are committed to supporting you as we work towards recovery and rebuilding,” he wrote. The governor revealed that he immediately instructed emergency services to the site upon learning of the fire to contain the situation and minimize further damage. He also directed relevant agencies to assess the losses and provide immediate relief to the affected traders. Additionally, Governor Ahmed announced the formation of a task force to investigate the cause of the fire and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. “We will work relentlessly to ensure the affected traders receive the support they need and that the market is restored to full operation as swiftly as possible,” he stated. The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to the safety and well-being of Sokoto residents. “Our administration remains dedicated to ensuring the safety, security, and prosperity of all in Sokoto State. We will continue to prioritize preventive measures and infrastructure development to protect our markets and communities,” he added.
