Shehu Sani: I Almost Faced Suspension for Exposing Senators’ Allowances in 2018

Former Kaduna senator, Shehu Sani, has revealed that he narrowly avoided a six-month suspension from the Senate in 2018 after disclosing the salaries and allowances of federal lawmakers.

In a post on X Thursday, Sani stated that he would have been suspended if not for the intervention of the then-Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

“When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of senators, I almost faced a six-month suspension, if not for divine intervention and the swift rescue by Saraki and Ekweremadu,” he wrote.

In March 2018, Sani revealed that senators received N13.5 million monthly as running costs, in addition to N200 million for constituency projects. His disclosure drew backlash from his colleagues, as lawmakers’ salaries are typically kept secret.

His comments follow the recent six-month suspension of Kogi Central Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan after her clash with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. On February 28, Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed on Arise TV that her issues in the Senate started after she rejected alleged sexual advances from Akpabio.
