Dr. Nwankwo Ekene, Public Relations Officer of Anambra State Polytechnic, challenged the notion that “school is a scam” at a youth leadership summit held on Friday, August 16, 2024, at Nnamdi Azikiwe University
The event, titled “Martin Agbili Leadership Summit (MALS 1.0) – Navigating Turbulence; Nurturing Leaders For A Dynamic Society,” was organized by the Junior Chamber International Nigeria (JCIN) UNIZIK chapter.
Dr. Ekene emphasized the importance of education despite current economic challenges. “School is not a scam; it’s a step necessary for every young individual’s journey in life,” she stated during a panel session. She shared her personal experience of being without a white-collar job for 10 years after graduation, stressing the need for patience and resilience.
Other speakers included JCIN Amb. Uti Inyang, who discussed social networking and business etiquette, and JCIN CLLR Cajetan Iyenagbe, who provided tips on balancing academic pursuits with leadership skills and business careers.
Dr. Martin Agbili, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth Development in Anambra State and guest of honor, encouraged youths to acquire digital skills and use social media productively. “Engage in things that will add value to your society,” he advised.
The summit also featured a public speaking competition with cash prizes, spoken word presentations, and networking opportunities.
JCI Emmanuella Otu, 2024 JCIN UNIZIK President, announced plans for a second edition of the event next year, highlighting the organization’s commitment to youth development.
The event attracted numerous students, with attendee Prosper Chinedu expressing his newfound interest in joining JCIN UNIZIK after the summit.
This leadership summit comes at a crucial time when many Nigerian youths are questioning the value of formal education in the face of economic challenges, aiming to redirect their focus towards long-term personal and societal development.
