A lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, has exposed the Mass Communication students of the institution to the rudiments of journalism practice in Nigeria.
This training took place recently during one of the lecturer’s classroom lectures.
www.odogwublog.com reports that the training sprouted after the lecturer had made the students attempt news writing for the first time in the institution.
However, he promised the students that as they keep improving, would take it upon himself to see that every outstanding work of theirs makes it to publication in their names.
Odogwu, in his attempt to correct, as well as clarify the 100 level students, pointed out that news writing has some basic requirements without which one’s attempt to produce an acceptable newsworthy content is futile.
He laid emphasized need to craft attention-grabbing headlines while writing news stories, noting that it serves to create first impression on the audience who will either be glued to it or skip the content.
“While writing a news story, apply the ‘KISS’ formula – “Keep It Simple and Short.” According to Odogwu, this will make your story coherent and straight to the point as application of unnecessary adjectives will end up destroying the beauty of your work,” he said.
He also admonished the students to take their studies seriously and improve in mastering their crafts as this will make them spokespersons wherever they find themselves.
