In the last decade, more than 2,000 cases of sexual and other forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) have been reported in Nigeria. Ophelia Adeleye, a representative from a civil society organization, shared this information in Calabar during the ongoing 16-day activism campaign against GBV. Adeleye, who serves as the communication officer for Stand Up Against Rape, made these remarks at a women’s event aimed at promoting greater political inclusion for women and reducing GBV. “There have been over 2,000 GBV cases across Nigerian states in which we have intervened,” Adeleye said. “These survivors have received indirect support, including legal, medical, psychosocial, and financial assistance, as well as counseling,” she added. Adeleye further revealed that only two percent of the survivors are male. She explained that the low number of male survivors is due to many men being reluctant to speak out about their experiences. “Only 2% of GBV cases involve men. This is because, for various reasons, they are less likely to report their challenges,” she said. “We have advocated for and counseled about 100,000 men, reaching them at public motor parks and other venues where we have gathered them to listen to and support them.”
