Dissatisfied at the rate of indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the roadsids by Chisco Park Management along Onitsha/Enugu Expressway, Ekwulobia Mass Transit at Port Harcourt road junction and others at Upper Iweka axis, the Onitsha South Major , Chief Emeka Orji, Tuesday warned that he would not hesitate to seal the parks as last resort since repeated warnings to them to stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the roadsides fell on deaf ears.
Sounding the note of warning when he paid an unscheduled official inspection to the roads within their vicinity, the council mayor reiterated the state government’s resolve to ensure a clean and healthy environment in Onitsha South Local Government Area, and the entire state.
He condemned in strong terms the dumping of refuse at the front of the parks and on the road sides even as he frowned at the neglect of his earlier warning to the Managers of these parks.
The council boss who Unfortunately did not meet the manager of Chisco Parks described such indiscriminate dumping of refuse as an eyesore to passers-by and other road users stating that Onitsha South must have a serene and healthy environment.
He lamented the exorbitant cost of evacuation of each trip of wastes by the council and warned the Managers of Chisco Transport Limited and Ekwulobia Transit to desist from such or have their parks sealed.
In his defence, the General Manager of Ekwulobia Mass Transit, Mr Christopher Onyegbuna disclosed that the dumping of refuse started since he was mandated by the government to stop parking his vehicles along the roadside, adding that the area would not have turned to a refuse dumping site if his vehicles had remained there.
