Ondo Court Orders Remand of Man for Allegedly Strangling Father to Death

A Magistrate Court in Akure, Ondo State, has ordered the remand of a 32-year-old man, Sunday Abilewa, for allegedly murdering his 68-year-old father, Abu Abilewa. Sunday was arrested by police detectives and charged with murder following the incident. According to the police prosecutor, Abdulateef Suleiman, the tragic event occurred on December 31, 2024, around 5 p.m. at Eberi Quarters in Isua Akoko, Ondo State. Suleiman stated that the accused allegedly demanded a new motorcycle from his father, but the deceased refused. The refusal led to an argument during which the defendant reportedly strangled his father. Efforts by the defendant’s mother to intervene were unsuccessful, as the accused was allegedly under the influence of hard drugs at the time. The prosecutor noted that the offence violates Section 316 and is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 37, Vol. II, Laws of Ondo State, 2006. He requested the court to remand the defendant in custody pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP). Presiding Magistrate F.A. Akinboboye did not take the plea of the defendant but ordered his remand at a custodial center until the DPP’s advice is obtained. The case was adjourned to February 25, 2025, for mention.
