Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers on Thursday urged the people of Ogoni nationality to promote lasting peace and eschew division among themselves.

Fubara, while speaking at the Ogoni Day celebration at Bori Town in Khana Local Government Area in Rivers, solicited for more support and partnership with his administration.

The governor, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, said his administration would urbanise communities in ogoniland.

The urbanisation, the governor assured, would begin to manifest when the ongoing reconstruction of internal roads in Bori Town was extended to other communities in the council.

“We do not joke with all the LGAs in the senatorial district, in which Ogoni is a major block, therefore, bringing development here is top priority of this administration.

“You know that we have talked about electricity and security in Ogoni land and these are top priorities of government,” he said.

Fubara stressed the importance of a peaceful atmosphere in achieving the planned development activities in Ogoni land and enjoined them to embrace peace.

“I therefore want to plead with everyone to put our hands together and allow peace to prevail across the state because without peace, there will be unnecessary division. We don’t need that now,” he added.

Chairman of the occasion, who is also the traditional ruler Gbenemene Tai, Samuel Nnee, said that Ogoni day celebration availed them an opportunity to renew their resolve to jealously guard the freedom and the rights God had given to Ogoni people.

Similarly, Dr Thomas Bariere, Chairman, Khana Local Government Area, harped on unity among Ogoni people, and asked them to look inwards, harness their strength and work assiduously to achieve a better Ogoni land as envisaged.

Mr Marvin Yobana, an Ogoni indegene, asserted that the people were equal, feeling same pain and joy together, decrying injustice, deprivation and marginalisation.
