The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has launched an initiative to offer free train rides to an estimated 340,000 passengers during the festive season. This effort is part of the Federal Government’s palliative measures to ease travel across major routes, ensuring affordable and seamless transportation throughout the Yuletide period. Ben Iluanosi, the Acting Managing Director of the NRC, spoke at Kubwa Station after the first round of free rides, confirming the initiative’s success. He reassured Nigerians of the NRC’s commitment to ensuring the program’s smooth operation, stating that about 20,000 passengers will benefit from the free service daily, covering routes such as Abuja-Kaduna, Lagos-Ibadan, Port Harcourt-Aba, Lagos Mass Transit, and Warri-Itape. Iluanosi also addressed concerns about crowd control and ticketing, urging passengers to plan ahead, book online, and use the service in an orderly manner. Security measures have been increased to prevent abuse of the service, and the NRC has implemented limits on ticket purchases to ensure fairness. The free rides will continue until January 4 or 5, 2024, with further updates to be shared by the NRC.
