The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a strong warning to the Nigerian Police Force, threatening a nationwide strike if its president, Joe Ajaero, is detained or harmed in any way.

The resolution was made public by NLC Deputy President, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, following an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) on Tuesday.

During the meeting, unionists gathered in large numbers at the NLC headquarters in Abuja, singing solidarity songs. They vowed to commence a strike starting from midnight on Tuesday “if anything happens to the president of the congress.

“A portion of the communique stated, “The NEC warns the state to abandon its malicious intentions and immediately cease the ongoing witch-hunt against the leaders of the Congress. The Congress will not stand by while the rights and freedoms of its members and leaders are trampled upon with impunity by the State.

“The NEC directs all affiliates and state councils to immediately begin mobilizing their members across the country. The Congress will not hesitate to take all necessary actions, including mass protests and industrial actions, to defend the integrity and independence of the labour movement. Should anything happen to the President of the Congress or any other leader in connection with these baseless allegations by the State, NEC instructs all affiliates and state councils to initiate an indefinite nationwide strike by 12:00 Midnight today.

“This warning follows a summons issued to Ajaero by the Nigerian Police Force, investigating him for allegations including terrorism financing, treasonable felony, and cybercrime. In a letter dated August 19, 2024, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu, Ajaero was ordered to appear for questioning by 10:00 am today, with a warrant of arrest threatened if he fails to comply.
