NLC Condemns Power Ministry’s N8bn Budget for Electricity Bill Sensitization as Wasteful, Corrupt

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has criticized the Power Ministry’s proposed N8 billion allocation for electricity bill sensitization, calling it a display of wastefulness and corruption. In a statement by its President, Joe Ajaero, the NLC decried the use of public funds to educate citizens on bill payments to private DISCOs, labeling it a misplaced priority amid persistent grid failures and widespread power outages. Key Points: NLC demands a full audit of the power sector’s budget to uncover financial recklessness. The union blames incompetent leadership in the Power Ministry and NERC for frequent grid collapses, claiming these failures exceed those under previous administrations. It argues the allocation is unjustifiable, especially given the country’s underfunded schools, hospitals, and crumbling infrastructure. The NLC warns of a potential total collapse of the power sector if wastefulness and inefficiency persist. The union calls on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and address mismanagement within the Ministry of Power and NERC to safeguard the sector’s future.
