The Rivers State Government has confirmed the death of nine individuals in a new cholera outbreak affecting two local government areas, Andoni and Akuku-Toru. During a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Thursday, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, disclosed that Andoni LGA recorded three deaths, while Akuku-Toru LGA reported six fatalities. She also noted that 41 suspected cases of cholera were identified across the two LGAs. Dr. Oreh expressed condolences to the victims and stated that the Ministry of Health is working to confirm the exact cause of the deaths, though the symptoms align with cholera. “Cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, thrives in areas with poor water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure,” Oreh explained. “It is transmitted through contaminated water, food, or contact with infected surfaces.” She highlighted that Rivers State frequently experiences outbreaks of acute watery diarrhea and cholera during the dry season, presenting significant public health challenges due to high morbidity and mortality rates. The commissioner outlined steps taken by the government to address the outbreak: Strengthening surveillance and activating emergency response measures. Collaborating with partners and local authorities in affected areas. Dr. Oreh also emphasized preventive measures for the public, including: Practicing food hygiene and frequent handwashing with soap and clean water. Ensuring the safety of drinking water by boiling or treating it with chlorine. Avoiding water from unverified sources and consuming thoroughly cooked food. The outbreak was brought to the attention of the Ministry of Health on January 11, 2025, after reports of three deaths within 48 hours in Isiodun community, Andoni LGA. A rapid response team promptly investigated the situation and initiated containment efforts. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to preventive guidelines to curb the spread of the disease.
