The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has formally issued a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government, citing unfulfilled agreements. This announcement, confirmed by ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC), signals the possibility of an impending strike if the government fails to address the union’s demands.

During a recent NEC meeting at the University of Ibadan, members discussed ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s public universities, focusing on the government’s continued failure to meet its obligations. Key issues include unpaid allowances, inadequate university funding, and the contentious Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

An NEC member, speaking anonymously, clarified that the notice is a formal warning rather than an ultimatum. “This is not an ultimatum but a strike notice. We are providing a 21-day window, after which we may proceed with a strike,” the member explained.

The notice will be sent to the relevant government bodies, including the Federal Ministries of Labour and Education, in accordance with labor laws. ASUU intends to follow all legal procedures, indicating that the union is serious about taking action if the government’s response is inadequate.

As the 21-day countdown begins, students, parents, and university staff across Nigeria are anxiously awaiting the government’s response, fearing yet another disruption to the academic calendar. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining whether the strike can be averted.
