The Federal Government has established a 10-member committee to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling on local council autonomy.

On July 11, the apex court delivered a landmark judgment granting full autonomy to the 774 local government areas across the country.

This development was announced in a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). The committee will be chaired by the SGF, George Akume.

The committee’s members include Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN); Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu; Accountant-General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein; and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Olayemi Cardoso.

The statement highlighted the committee’s primary objective: “The committee’s primary goal is to ensure that local governments are granted full autonomy, allowing them to function effectively without interference from state governments.

“This initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to properly implementing the constitutional provisions that recognize local governments as the third tier of government.
