New NYSC DG, Nafiu Assumes Office, Outlines Key Plans

Brig.-Gen. Olakunle Nafiu has officially taken over as the 23rd Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

At the handover ceremony in Abuja on Thursday, Nafiu reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of both corps members and NYSC staff while ensuring transparent and effective leadership.

“The well-being of corps members will remain a top priority. We will work to make their service year a memorable experience,” he assured.

He also pledged improvements to key NYSC initiatives, particularly the job-matching programme, aimed at increasing employment opportunities for corps members in the private sector.

“This initiative will also encourage employers to retain a significant number of corps members after their service year,” he added.

Nafiu, who succeeded Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, further promised enhancements in camp feeding and hygiene, stating, “My team and I will work tirelessly to improve these essential aspects.”

Highlighting the NYSC’s role in fostering national unity since its establishment in 1973, he urged staff members to serve as role models to corps members.

Before his appointment, Nafiu was the Chief of Staff to the Chief of Army Staff. He holds a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, a Master’s in International Affairs and Diplomacy from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a BSc in Geography from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna.
