MTN Nigeria Proposes 100% Increase in Call and Data Tariffs

MTN Nigeria has submitted a proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) seeking a 100% increase in service tariffs, according to the company’s CEO, Karl Toriola. Speaking on Arise TV, Toriola acknowledged that the approval of such a hike is uncertain due to the prevailing economic hardships in the country. “We’ve requested approximately 100% tariff increases, but I doubt regulators will approve such a large hike given their sensitivity to the current economic situation,” he said. The proposal comes amidst rising speculation about a potential telecom tariff increase in 2025. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, recently warned of a possible industry shutdown if tariffs are not adjusted. Telecom subscribers, however, have expressed strong opposition to any price increases.
