Mgbakwu elects Obianuju Obiorah as Woman PG, task Soludo on road infrastructure, empowerment.

Women of Mgbakwu Community in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State have elected Evangelist Obianuju Obiorah as the President-general of Mgbakwu Progressive Union (MPU), Women’s Wing.

Prior to the election held on July 10, 2024, the Women’s Wing informed the Ogbanabo Age grade (the Presiding age grade) that the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs has been informed about the expiration of the tenure and peaceful step-down of Chief Mrs Lolo Ngozi Julie Nwankwo and dissolution of other executive members on July 1, 2024.

The letter addressed to the Women Affairs Commissioner was copied to Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, ASATU Woman President-general, DWO Awka North LGA,. Transition Committee Chairman of Awka North LGA, Hon. Commissioner of Police and President-genetral of Mgbakwu Town Union.

The letter which was also copied to the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), SSA Inter-party Affairs, DPO Achalla, Civil Society Organization, ABS Awka and Radio Nigeria Purity FM Mgbakwu, was signed by Lady Ngozika Egwu (Electoral Committee Chairlady), Mrs Ifeoma Chinweuba (Electoral Committee Secretary), Ojiefi Theresa Nwodo (Head of Ogbanabo) and Chief Mrs Lolo Ngozi Julie Nwankwo respectively.

In a keenly-contested election based on Option A 4 electoral process, Mrs Obiora won the election with a total number of 285 votes while the her rival, Mrs Chioma Anaso polled 165 votes, with Mrs Lucy Ndubuisi withdrawing at the last minute.

Announcing the winners, the Chief Electoral Officer, Lady Ngozi Egwu said Evangelist Obiora fulfilled all the requirements and was thus returned as the winner of the election.

The other elected officers are:
Mrs Angela Mbonu – (Vice Women Leader),
Mrs Monica Oramalu (Secretary),
Mrs Catherine Nwodo (Financial Secretary),
Benedict Onwuegbula, Francisca Oraekie and Ifeoma Nwankwo as members.

Mgbakwu Community has seven villages such as Ama-Ezike, Amankpu, Ama-Eze,.Amaece, Achala Umami, Otulu n’Onaga and Akaman’ato.

Lady Egwu hailed the free, fair and peaceful conduct of the election and appreciated the police and media personnel, among others, for the making out time to perform their duties conscientiously.

In her post-election speech, the new PG, Evangelist Obiorah assured of peace and carry every one and mobilize Women to achieve their yearnings.

She called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to assist to Mgakwu – Radio Nigeria – Ebenebe Road, Mgbakwu – Isuanaocha – Urum Amanuke Road.

According to her, Mgbakwu is a food-producing community and if the roads are constructed, they would boost conveyance of farm.produce from Mgbakwu to other parts of the State.

Contributing, her rival, Mrs Anaso who is Certified Chartered Accountant threw her weight behind the leadership of the new PG, stressing that in any election, a winner and a loser must emerge.

Mrs Anaso said election should not be a do-or-die, but as a healthy contest to produce leadership to guide women.of the Community to achieve their aims and purpose.

She assured that she would put her wealth of knowledge and experience in the service of the new leadership to access loans and grants from Bank of Industry (BoI), Anambra Small Business Agency (ASBA), Nigeria Directorate of Employment (NDE) as Executive Member and Adviser of the Women’s Wing.
