Measles Outbreak Kills Two, Infects 20 in Zaria

A measles outbreak in Ungwan Kanawa, Zaria LGA of Kaduna State, has claimed two lives and infected at least 20 others, health officials confirmed on Monday.
Authorities linked the outbreak to years of vaccine hesitancy. In response, the Kaduna State Government, UNICEF, and WHO have launched emergency vaccination drives and intensified surveillance efforts.
UNICEF’s Dr. Gerida Birukila warned that vaccine shortages threaten containment efforts, urging consistent supply to protect vulnerable children. Health officials have mobilized outreach teams to boost immunization and prevent further spread.
Residents are advised to cooperate with health workers to curb the outbreak.
