Kaduna Refinery, Second Port Harcourt Refineries Undergoing Comprehensive Overhaul – NNPC

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that the 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery are currently undergoing a comprehensive overhaul to meet global standards. Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, clarified in a statement that this effort goes beyond the traditional Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) previously performed. The work being done at the 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery and the Warri Refinery is part of a broader rehabilitation plan to ensure sustainable and efficient operations. The clarification comes in response to comments from former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who questioned the viability and operational status of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. Obasanjo had cited concerns raised by Shell Petroleum Development Company about the Port Harcourt Refinery’s viability and accused NNPC of misleading Nigerians about the state of its refineries. Soneye highlighted the company’s achievements, emphasizing that while the Warri and 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt refineries have been rehabilitated, similar efforts are underway at the second Port Harcourt Refinery and Kaduna Refinery. He assured that NNPC is committed to maintaining these facilities to world-class standards. In response to Obasanjo’s concerns, Soneye invited the former president to visit the rehabilitated refineries to witness the progress made. “We extend an invitation to our esteemed former president to join us in this historic journey. His wisdom and experience are invaluable, and we deeply appreciate his insights and guidance,” Soneye said. He also acknowledged Obasanjo’s contributions to national development, noting that his opinions on matters of national importance are highly respected. Soneye further highlighted NNPC’s transformation from a loss-making entity to a profit-driven global energy company. Under the leadership of GCEO Mele Kyari and with the support of President Bola Tinubu’s energy policies, NNPC has evolved into an integrated energy company, focusing on both traditional and cleaner, sustainable energy solutions.
