Gombe Governor Vows to Clear ₦19bn Gratuity Backlog by 2027

Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has reiterated his administration’s dedication to resolving the gratuity liabilities of state retirees. During a cheque presentation event for gratuity payments on Monday, Yahaya disclosed that ₦17.2 billion of the ₦21 billion backlog inherited from previous administrations in 2019 has already been cleared. Despite this progress, the outstanding gratuity obligations now stand at ₦19 billion, covering both state and local government retirees. Governor Yahaya assured that his administration is committed to clearing the backlog entirely by 2027, emphasizing his desire to leave no liabilities behind. “Today’s event underscores our resolve to ensure no retiree is left without their due benefits. We solemnly commit to clearing all gratuity obligations by the end of our tenure, leaving a legacy of accountability and compassion.” Yahaya also highlighted recent measures to improve civil servants’ welfare, including implementing a ₦70,000 minimum wage for state government workers to mitigate economic challenges like the removal of the fuel subsidy. Acknowledging the role of stakeholders, Yahaya commended labor unions, retiree associations, and others for their patience and cooperation throughout the process. “Your support has been instrumental in guiding our reforms and ensuring civil servants’ welfare remains a top priority for our administration.”
