Enugu Govt. advises residents against building on waterways

This is contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Aka Eze Aka, on Tuesday in Enugu, who said that erring residents could have such properties demolished.
“Government has observed with dismay the impudent manner some individuals and groups erect structures within and along various water ways in Enugu metropolis.
“This is in spite of repeated warnings and notices against the practice,” Aka said.
The commissioner said that people build structures on waterways without bearing in mind the potential danger of flooding.
“For purposes of emphasis, any structure, building or any use of land that is within 16 metres from the shoreline of the waterways is against the extant land laws in Enugu State.
“Government, therefore, warn owners of landed property built without regards to laws guiding erection of structures on waterways and in particular along Ekulu River in Enugu to either obey the law or face its consequences.
“Government will not shirk in upholding the standard set by the law for structures on waterways.
“Those who have structures on Ekulu River are advised in their own interest to remove such structures immediately,” Aka warned.
