ENSG will wield into the crisis among Achi Traditional Rulers, Commissioner Ogbodo assures

There is now fresh hope of resolving the lingering crisis among the traditional institutions in Achi, a hospitable town in the Oji River Local Government area of Enugu state. The Enugu state government has promised to look into the issues with the assurance of finding a lasting solution and restoring peace among them.

The Enugu State Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo gave the assurance, at the event if 2004 celebration of OGA AGA-AGWU AGWU,(unending festival), a triennial cultural festival of Avhi people, held on at Obu Achi on January 1st, 2024.

Commissioner Ogbodo told the crowd that there was an invitation and counter invitation to him not to attend the cultural festival. But the fact that Governor Mbah led administration runs an all-inclusive government, he honored the invitation and at the same time wished to reach out to the other group of traditional rulers.

 He disclosed that he has also used the opportunity to carry out a primary investigation, stating that peace is a vital instrument for development.

He comnended Achi as a town  whose illlustrous sons like late senator B.C.Okwu,Late Professor Sydney Mgbejiofor and presently Rev.Senator Hyde Onuaguluchi among others played significant role in shaping the politics of Igbo land to the benefit of the state.

He also commended the human empowerment programme through schorlarshio embedded in the celebration of Oga aga-Agwu Agwu cultural festival.

He stated,”I am here to participate on the celebration of  ‘Oga-aga,Agwu -agwu,being your ancestral culture. I also received phone calls from some of your prominent citizens not to attend because of your misunderstandings.  I also purposely came to carry out some investigation” .

“The present administration in Enugu led by Governor Peter Mbah runs an all inclusive government.There cannot be any meaningful development in a crisis situation. I am here to plead with you for peace. We know Achi to have 12 autonomous comnunities with different traditional  rulers”

“I found nothing wrong with the celebration of your culture’Oga aga -Agwu agwu,but learnt that the problem is which group should supritend and head the festival.I will wield into the crises so as to restore peace among Achi traditional rulers. I am assuring within this year(2024),We shall resolve the matter”.

Checks revealed that conttroversies surrounding the stool of ‘Ezeala 111’  divided the leadership of Achi Traditional Institution between HRH Igwe Gofwin Madu, the traditional ruler of Mbaogu autonomous community  and HRH Igwe Sunday Orah,the traditional ruler of Adu-Achi autonomous community.

Igwe Godwin Madu reiterrated at the 2024 Oga Aga-Agwu Agwu festival that the conferment of Ezeala 111 of Achi satisfied all provisions in the Achi amended constitution  which stipulates that the stool of EZEALA should be rotated between ‘Achi -Agu clan(six autonomous communities) and Achi-Uno clan( six communities).

Igwe Godwin Madu explained that with the passage of Igwe Eugene Onyelu,Ezeala 11 of Achi to the great beyond,who hailed from Achi -Uno clan, it behoved Achi-Agu clan to produce
Ezeala 111. He stressed the stool was conferred on him on merit,having satisfied all the provisions in 1997 Achi amended constittution.

 Giving his own side of the story,Igwe Sunday Orah of Adu Achi community,who is the leader of the group against the installation of Igwe Godwin Madu as Ezeala 111 of Achi,told The AUTHORITY that the stool of Ezeala ceased to exist in Achi town with the creation of the twelve autonomous communities. He said while Igwe Onyelu was alive,He accepted the fate and limited his activities to his own immediate autonomous community,Amanator.He said there was no paragraph in the Ministry of Chieftancy Affairs, where the stool of ‘EZEALA 111’ of Achi is embedded.But what is obtainable are the Traditionals in their various autonomous communities

He stressed it is wrong for Igwe Godwin Madu and a few others to use the title of Ezeala 111, not recognised by the Chieftancy Affairs to ursup the duties of Achi Traditional rulers,of which him(Sunday Orah) in his capacity as Chairman of Achi Traditional Rulers Council is supposed to preside.

Igwe Orah said,”We had no constitutional provision for EZEALA 111.So it is strange for somebody to create a non existing position to call it Ezeala 111 and Ezeala 111 in Council.The twelve traditional rulers have no hand in it”.

The AUTHORITY further checks revealed that prominents sons of Achi town had at different times wielded into the crises within Achi Traditional Rulers which has persisted for over three years,with a view of resolving it,all to no avail.All hope lies onc the current promise by the state commissioner for Local Government,Rural Development and Chieftancy Affairs,Hon.Deacon Okey Ogbodo,that the state government will intervene
