EFCC Recovers N248bn, $105m, and Assets in 2024 – ONSA

The Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) announced on Monday that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recovered over N248 billion, $105 million, and 753 duplexes in its asset recovery efforts for 2024. Zakari Mijinyawa, ONSA’s Director of Legal, shared this update during the Strategic Communications Inter-Agency Policy Committee Meeting. He also highlighted that the EFCC secured 3,455 convictions by October 2024. In addition to the EFCC’s efforts, a joint military operation led by the National Security Adviser rescued 36 abducted farmers on December 8, 2024, and the military’s actions also thwarted oil theft worth N57.05 billion. Noteworthy reforms in the EFCC included the establishment of the Fraud Risk Assessment and Control (FRAC) department and the restructuring of its zonal offices. The commission also launched its 97.3FM radio station for public education. High-profile individuals, including four former governors and other officials, are currently on trial for financial crimes. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) also achieved significant successes in 2024, recovering N29.685 billion and $966,900, tracking 1,500 constituency and executive projects, and securing 35 convictions. Other agencies like the Nigeria Police Force, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) also made strides in combating crime and drug trafficking, exceeding revenue targets and seizing illicit goods. These actions underscore the collective efforts of Nigeria’s security and regulatory bodies in strengthening governance and tackling crime in 2024.
