COOU MEDICAL COLLEGE ELECTS 4TH PROVOST IN A HISTORIC EXERCISE

The Management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Anambra State on Friday 9th August 2024, under the leadership of the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha, elected Prof. Lawrence Ikeakor as the 4th Provost of the College of Medicine, Amaku, Awka.

In a well-attended exercise with a total of 57 Academic staff of the college present, the election was adjudged to be the most transparent, free and fair democratic exercise in the history of the College. Participants appraised the University management for disallowing parochial interest and insisting that truly, nothing could be compared with a free, fair and transparent democratic process. They urged Prof. Omenugha-led administration to sustain the tempo as that to them, would encourage love, peace and conviviality.

Prof. Lawrence Ikeakor, a former Chief Medical Director of the University Teaching Hospital emerged as the winner of the election with a close tie against Prof. Chukwudi Okani.

Matching words with action, Prof. Omenugha alongside other Management Officers of the University took the Provost Elect around a few facilities within the Student’s hostel where immediate attention is needed.

Speaking to COOUNewS 2024, Prof. Ikeakor called for unity, support, collaboration, and prayers from Staff, Students, and friends of the College while emphasizing that the exercise was a brotherly contest as truly, “no victor, no vanquish”.

“… the work ahead is enormous, fundamentally, I am ready to work assiduously with the University Management to restore the glory days of this College! Together, we did it before and we will do it again. I most respectfully thank the Ag. Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kate Azuka Omenugha for her transparency in the whole exercise by ensuring that all the provisions of the College law were met. No winner, and no loser in this contest. We are one big family and we will immediately move to close ranks to carry everyone along. We shall work together in peace and love to the growth and development of the College and the University at large…” He said.

Similarly, Prof. Omenugha congratulated the Medical College Family and thanked them for their active support since her assumption of Office and particularly their participation in the exercise. She encouraged the Provost Elect to match words with action and commence immediate turnaround of the College basically on promoting medical ethics and ensuring that the University graduates globally competitive medical students while assuring that the University Management will never play down the issue of workers’ welfare for truly, a worker deserves his wage.

The exercise was conducted at the Histopathology Hall of the College in Amaku, by the Registrar of the University, Sir. Chris Obi with the Deputy Vice-Chancellors; Prof. M. O. Ananti, Prof. Osita Chiaghanam, the Ag. University Bursar, Dr. Nath Udezo, and the Director Legal Unit, Prof. Steve Unachukwu in attendance.
