The Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Anambra State chapter, Venerable Joseph Nweke has berated the federal government over what he claimed as the continuous use of wrong terms to express the situations and feelings of the people.
Ven. Nweke’s statement was in reaction to the gruesome shooting and killing of worshippers at Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo, the headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State
Against federal government’s comments that the worshippers were killed by bomb blast, the Cleric who fielded questions from newsmen in Onitsha, Anambra State, claimed that the killing was perpetrated with gun shootings by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
“No, it was not bomb explosion that killed people at Owo. The hoodlums went into the Church and shot at people. Government should stop using wrong terms to express the feelings of people. The other day it was at Sokoto, they said it was explosion, other one at Kano, they said it was explosion. They are now trying to term these barbaric acts by Fulani bandits explosion.
“It was not bombing explosion, it was an attempt by Fulani to annihilate people of the southwest. Yoruba is part of Southern Nigeria and these are plans we had been crying about for the past two years.”
Ven. Nweke’s , who is the Archdeacon of the Onitsha Archdeaconry regrets the growing fear among Christians especially situations where people go to Church to worship God and return to their houses as corpse.
While he noted that the National body of CAN has condemned the incident as well as sent delegation to the families of the victims, Church and Owo Community, he urged the federal government to wake up to their duty of ensuring safety of life in the country.
