CAPPA Urges N300m Budget for Tobacco Control to Combat Health Crisis

The Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on the National Assembly to allocate N300m for tobacco control in the 2025 budget, up from the current N10m. CAPPA emphasized the need for expanded funding to address the 26,800 annual deaths linked to tobacco use in Nigeria and to implement the National Tobacco Control Act effectively. The group highlighted health risks, environmental damage, and youth-targeted marketing of unregulated tobacco products. CAPPA also advocated for robust awareness campaigns, alternative livelihoods for tobacco farmers, and the operationalisation of the Tobacco Control Fund to support enforcement and public health initiatives.
