Benue Traditional Rulers Reject Land Negotiations with Herders

Traditional rulers in Gwer West LGA, Benue State, have strongly opposed any negotiations with herders to cede land within the council. The decision followed an expanded meeting of the Gwer West Traditional Council held in Naka and chaired by HRH Daniel Abomtse.
In a communique issued Monday, the council condemned ongoing herder attacks that have led to killings, rapes, and destruction of communities across 15 wards. They warned that no individual is authorized to negotiate land deals or co-existence terms with herders, stressing that violators would face legal action.
The traditional leaders also urged security agencies to intensify efforts in tackling insecurity, called on local youth to remain vigilant, and appealed for calm following recent violent protests that resulted in the burning of the Ter Tyoshin’s palace and other properties.
