The Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has dismantled a suspected land-grabbing syndicate, recovering over 1,200 plots of land and arresting key individuals allegedly involved in the fraudulent activities. The commission, led by its Chairman, Muhyi Magaji Rimin Gado, has launched an in-depth investigation into the syndicate, which reportedly operated in collaboration with judiciary staff, lawyers, and land officials to fraudulently acquire both public and private lands. Speaking on Friday, Rimin Gado disclosed that the syndicate exploited legal loopholes, forging documents, backdating sales agreements, and obtaining fraudulent court judgments to legitimize their claims. “These land-grabbers colluded with individuals in positions of authority to seize lands fraudulently. They manipulated legal processes, forged affidavits, and targeted properties belonging to deceased individuals, absentee owners, or unaware landowners,” he explained. One highlighted case involved 40 plots of land valued at over ₦20 million, which were returned to the rightful owner despite the syndicate’s efforts to seize them with falsified documents. During the operation, PCACC arrested several suspects, including lawyers and public officials. A key suspect was caught with ₦2,857,000 in cash and other incriminating evidence, and he allegedly attempted to bribe an arresting officer for his release. The commission uncovered instances where fraudulent court applications and fictitious defendants were used to obtain consent judgments, which were later employed to intimidate landowners. “We are pursuing legal action against all involved, ensuring that justice is served based on sound legal advice,” Rimin Gado stated. The PCACC is collaborating with the Department of State Services (DSS) and other stakeholders to dismantle the network and prevent future occurrences. Rimin Gado praised the state government’s efforts to reform the system and pledged the commission’s commitment to transparency and accountability in land administration. “This investigation is a significant milestone in the fight against corruption and will serve as a deterrent to others,” he added. The commission’s actions underscore its dedication to safeguarding property rights and restoring public trust in Kano’s land administration system.
