Anambra Police Launch Operation Udo-Gachi to Promises Safety During Easter and Beyond

Security in Anambra State, a region often marked by violent incidents, remains a sensitive and critical sector that has drawn significant attention due to its undeniable importance. This necessity has driven the advancement of security operations in the state, including the establishment of additional security agencies.
As part of efforts to enhance security, the Anambra State Police Command has launched Operation Udo-Gachi: Zero Kidnapping and Other Violent Crimes, a specialized unit tasked with eradicating cultism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes across the state.
The official launch of Operation Udo-Gachi took place on Monday, April 14, 2025, at the Amawbia Flyover along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway. The event was attended by representatives from various security agencies and their leadership.

Speaking at the launch, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, emphasized that the operation followed a thorough review of policing capabilities to address serious crimes, particularly as residents prepare to travel home for Easter celebrations.
“The Police, as the lead agency in internal security, have implemented Operation Udo-Gachi: Zero Kidnapping and Other Violent Crimes—a proactive strategy to alleviate fears and effectively police the state. We encourage the great people of Anambra State to return home en masse for this festive period,” CP Orutugu stated.
The Commissioner further highlighted the collaborative nature of the operation, involving multiple security agencies working together to restore peace and safety across the state.
“No single agency can claim sole credit for maintaining security in the state. This operation is a joint effort involving the Police, Army, Navy, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerian Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Vigilante, and most importantly, Ndi Anambra and its citizens. Their cooperation in sharing information will be instrumental in apprehending and prosecuting criminals,” CP Orutugu noted.

He added that security forces are now better equipped and motivated, with the operation providing a coordinated approach to reclaim public spaces. A Joint Security Information Room has been established to facilitate public reporting of suspicious activities, supported by dedicated emergency lines for rapid response.
Hon. Kingsley Ezika (Legacy), Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security, also addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of unity among security agencies.
“There is nothing like unity. I call on my colleagues to embrace unification—it is the only way to address every situation effectively. If the military, police, civil defense, and other agencies work independently without unity, we cannot achieve success. This unity has brought us to where we are today. When we talk about being the best in security, Anambra State will not be left behind,” Hon. Ezika remarked.
He further called for greater appreciation of security personnel who risk their lives for the safety of others.
“It’s unfortunate that we often fail to appreciate our security men, even those who stake their lives in the line of duty. A platform should be created where prominent individuals from our state can come together to honor military personnel and service chiefs. This initiative could be held two or three times a year to assess their needs. Security is a collective responsibility, not solely the governor’s,” Hon. Ezika added.

The event was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Anambra Restaurants and Bar Owners Association, media professionals, and community leaders. The joint security initiative underscores the commitment to making Anambra State a safe and livable environment for all.
