The Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) Mr. Ossy Onuko has inspected the ongoing reconstruction of failed portion of Iyiagu flood channel in Awka, Anambra State.

The critical drainage system which channels stormwater from Awka inner city suffered severe damage during last year rainy season leading to devastating flood that submerged residential areas.

Addressing Journalists at the site, Mr. Onuko reaffirmed government commitment to mitigating the impact of flooding through strategic rehabilitation and reconstruction of drainage infrastructure. He explained that the project aligns with Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo Public Private Community Partnership (PPCP) model ensuring sustainable urban development.

“The ongoing reconstruction is focused on restoring the damaged drainage system and improving water flow, which will also support the Fun City project currently under construction” Onuko stated.

The failure of the Sakamori drainage last year had worsened flooding in the area, underscoring the urgency of the intervention. Residents have welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the improved drainage system will protect them from future flood.
