A Tale of a Last Born – By Umeh Grace Amarachi

I was born into a world painted with hues of love and privilege, the youngest of three children and the undisputed darling of my grandmother.
Her affection was a warm blanket that enveloped me, shielding me from life’s harsher realities.
Being the last born often comes with its perks, and I was no exception.
Pampered and cherished, I developed a taste for the finer things in life, a trait I undoubtedly inherited from my indulgent grandmother.
As a child, my world revolved around the pages of novels.
Lost in the realms of fiction, I discovered a passion for storytelling.
With each turn of the page, a dream ignited within me – to become a weaver of words, a master of communication.
By the time the innocence of primary school washed over me, my career path was crystal clear: Mass Communication. The allure of the media industry was irresistible, that i envisioned myself as a TV presenter in this dynamic field.
Nnamdi Azikiwe University, with its reputation for academic excellence, became the stage on which I planned to showcase my talents.
It was a dream I held close to my heart, a beacon guiding my academic journey.
My grandmother, a woman of wisdom and foresight, played a pivotal role in shaping my ambition.
She often reminded me that my destiny lay far beyond the confines of our village. Her words were a constant source of motivation, fueling my determination to excel academically and professionally.
She instilled in me the belief that hard work and education were the keys to unlocking a life of comfort and fulfillment.
Her mantra was simple yet profound: “You are not destined for a village life, my child. You must study hard and work even harder to build a comfortable life for yourself.” These words resonated deeply within me, inspiring me to strive for greatness.
The journey to university was not without its challenges.
The delay in gaining admission was a setback, but it was also an opportunity for growth.
It taught me the importance of patience and perseverance. Eventually, I secured a place at my dream university, and to this day, I am grateful for the path that led me there.
Now, as I embark on this new chapter, I am filled with anticipation and excitement, tempered by a profound sense of loss. The world of mass communication awaits, and I am eager to make my mark. However, a pang of sorrow accompanies my excitement, as I realize that my grandmother, is not here to witness this milestone. Her absence casts a long shadow, but her memory continues to inspire me.
The girl who once dreamed of lost worlds within the pages of a book is now ready to create her own stories. I carry her spirit with me as I step into this new chapter, determined to make her proud.
