Jigawa Court Sentences Two to Death for Murder

A Jigawa State High Court has sentenced Hamimu Awwalu and Ashiru Salisu to death by hanging for culpable homicide.

Justice Ahmed Abubakar of High Court No. 4 delivered the verdict on Friday, convicting the two men from Sabalari Village, Dutse Local Government Area, on charges of conspiracy, deceitful abduction for ransom, and culpable homicide.

The ruling followed testimonies from four prosecution witnesses, while the defense presented two witnesses.

The convicts were found guilty of causing the death of Tahir Adamu Hassan on April 4, 2024. The judge stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt, demonstrating that the accused intentionally caused the victim’s death.

As part of the sentencing, both convicts received one-year imprisonment for conspiracy, while for the abduction and homicide charges, they were sentenced to death by hanging.

Despite showing remorse, the court maintained that justice must prevail.

According to Jigawa State Judiciary’s Director of Publicity and Protocol, Mr. Abbas Wangara, the trial judge found the convicts guilty under Sections 96 and 97 of the Penal Code Law, Cap. P3, Laws of Jigawa State, 2012.

Wangara emphasized that the ruling reaffirms the justice system’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for violent crimes.
