The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has described the passing of former FCT Minister Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni as the loss of “one of the biggest trees in the forest of Nigeria.” In a statement issued through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Wike expressed deep sorrow over Useni’s death and highlighted the profound impact he had during his lifetime. Wike praised Useni’s contributions to Nigeria, particularly his tenure as FCT Minister from 1993 to 1998, noting that his legacy will be remembered by Nigerians. He said: “From enlisting in the Army at the age of 14 to serving as the Military Governor of the defunct Bendel State, Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, FCT Minister, and Senator representing Plateau South, Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni was truly a man of remarkable service to his nation. “Fondly called ‘Jerry Boy,’ he was a jovial and selfless leader who prioritized the welfare of the people. “The late General epitomized great virtues, leaving an indelible mark on Nigerians, especially the Tarok people of Plateau State. “His departure is a tremendous loss to the people of Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation as a whole. “On behalf of myself and the residents of the FCT, I mourn the passing of General Jeremiah Timbut Useni—a patriot, a fine military officer, a peacemaker, a politician, and a man of faith in Almighty God. “May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
