The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed allegations that Jonathan Okunbor, a suspect in an alleged ₦6 billion fraud case, is a witness in the ongoing Edo State election tribunal. The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, clarified in a statement on Wednesday that Okunbor is under investigation for misappropriation of funds involving all 18 local government areas in Edo State. Oyewale said, “Mr. Okunbor is not a witness for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the tribunal. He is, in fact, the primary suspect in a case involving the diversion of approximately ₦6 billion to Kezmith Global Ventures, a company he operates using the identity of another individual, Mr. Godfrey Emode.” The commission disclosed that Emode’s arrest led investigators to Okunbor, who was apprehended at Eterno Hotel during a pre-trial meeting. EFCC officials faced resistance from PDP governorship candidate Asue Ighodalo and others present, who attempted to obstruct the arrest. Despite claims by Ighodalo that Okunbor was a witness in the tribunal, his legal counsel confirmed to EFCC investigators that Okunbor held no such role. Oyewale emphasized the EFCC’s commitment to due process, stating, “The EFCC will pursue corruption charges irrespective of any tribunal-related affiliations. Our focus is on upholding transparency and accountability.” He urged the public to disregard misleading claims and assured that the commission remains steadfast in its constitutional mandate.
