GBV: Aforka advocates continuous education to eliminate GBV

Former lawmaker that represented Orumba North Constituency, Hon Emeka Aforka, has highlighted the importance of education and continuous learning in combating gender-based violence (GBV).
Hon Aforka who spoke at a symposium organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, in collaboration with Kolors of Africa TV themed: ‘Unveiling the spectrum of gender based violence : empowering the youth for collective action’ emphasized that knowledge is pivotal for societal growth.
He urged attendees to prioritize education in addressing societal issues like GBV.
The event drew a distinguished gathering of intellectuals, including Dr. Martha Egenti, Deputy Director of Awka Window America, and Prof. Chinwe Uzochukwu, the current HOD of the Mass Communication department at Paul University Awka.
Also present was the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs. Chiamaka Nnaike, represented by Dr. Chioma, among other notable dignitaries.
Mrs. Okoye Hope, Executive Director at INTACOM AFRICA, delivered a keynote lecture on GBV, defining it as any harmful action against individuals. She emphasized the need for comprehensive reporting, protecting the identities of victims, and gathering sufficient evidence to aid justice. Mrs. Okoye urged vigilance, reminding all to “see something, say something.”
Dr. Ikechukwu Umeh, HOD of the Information Communication and Technology department at NAU, addressed the role of ICT in tackling GBV. He outlined various ways technology can be leveraged, including mapping incidents, providing legal support, and facilitating community engagement. Dr. Umeh also identified poverty, conflict, stress, and cyber violence among the causes of GBV, proposing ICT-driven solutions such as user-centered design and community participation.
The event underscored the vital role of education and technology in combating GBV, advocating for a multi-faceted approach involving both societal awareness and technological innovation.
